San Ignacio

San Ignacio is located on the west bank of the Macal River a couple of miles upstream from its confluence with the Mopan River – a meeting of waters that gives birth to the Belize River. This once-remote location between two rivers gives San Ignacio its alternative name of Cayo a Spanish word meaning ‘island.’

If you are looking for some place to sleep there are a hand full of full service resorts, but the real beauty is in the lodges. They come in all shapes and sizes, and they are always unique. In the San Ignacio proper, you can find some good hotels, but make sure that if you are looking for something quiet you aren’t too close to Burns Ave.

San Ignacio is a great place to spend a few days, as it makes a wonderful base to visit incredible sites in Belize such as ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal), Xunantunich and Caracol, and Cahal Pech which is on top of the hill in San Ignacio. On top of that, there’s the advantage of being so close to the Guatemalan border, that a day trip to one of the most impressive Mayan sites in the world, Tikal, is a must.
